Plotinus was a major figure in the systematic development of the Hellenistic philosophy of Stoicism. He came from a wealthy family and is often regarded as a "Stoic sage" by his admirers. Plotinus was born in Egypt into a family that had been exiled from their home in Asia Minor. After being invited back to Asia Minor by his relative Plotina, he travelled Asia Minor to study rhetoric and philosophy before settling at Rome, where he taught at the Platonic Academy
In Rome he became a close friend of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, whom he assisted in philosophically organizing the empire. After the emperor's death, he withdrew from public life for seven years, traveling throughout Greece and Asia Minor before returning to Italy at age 45. Thereafter, he taught at Rome and other cities in Italy and Asia Minor for almost twenty years.
He died about 270 CE, shortly after the death of his son-in-law Zeno of Sidon.
